Hey what's up welcome back to Soul
Sunday's!  For the last 2 Sunday's I've changed it up and played you some Old school
funk.  Hope you liked those selections.  Today's selection are a couple of my
Favorites..... " I love you for all seasons", "Like an open Door" & "Leave It all
behind me" featuring The Fuzz. 

The Fuzz was an American vocal trio from Washington, D.C.. They started out in 1970
as The Passionettes, but changed their name when they signed to Calla Records in
1971. Their self-titled debut album came out that year, and the single "I Love You
for All Seasons" went Top 10 on the US Billboard R&B chart and peaked at #21 on the
US Billboard Hot 100.  The follow-up single, "Like an Open Door", hit #14 on the R&B
chart, but further singles had no success and sadly the group split up in 1972. 
Here's another talented female group that didn't make it in the music industry but
their music continues to play on and touch people's lives.  "I love you for all
seasons" was one of the songs  that Cartoon & I chose for our wedding CD we made for

Welcome to Soul Sundays, today's selection is "Double Dutch Bus" By Frankie Smith. I never realized this song was behind a big scandal. Here, is a history lesson in the small role that Frankie Smith played in uncoveringthe “Yuppie Conspiracy” (dubbed as such by Federal authorities) ran by the LarryLavin scandal West Philly dentist and $5M/175 lbs.-of-cocaine-per-month.From1978-1984, Larry Lavin masterminded his huge cocaine-distribution ring whichincluded 3 graduates of UPenn dental, two lawyers, four stockbrokers, an airplanepilot, a high school English teacher, an elementary school principal, record companyexecutives, accountants, a New Jersey state auditor, a psychologist, a registerednurse, and a variety of businessmen. Now, for the Double Dutch Connection: While still in dental school, Lavin was rakingin millions of dollars and needed outlets to dump this money in without arousingsuspicion. One such investment, proposed through friend and co-conspirator MarkStewart, was WMOT-TEC Records (which was situated in the Wellington Building on 19thSt., right off Rittenhouse Square). WMOT-TEC, which had distribution through CBSRecords, released Frankie Smith’s “Double Dutch Bus” in 1981; upon release, thetrack’s popularity grew steadily on the Billboard soul charts. In his 2000 bookDoctor Dealer. Mark Bowden writes, “Months later, Larry found out that Mark hadincurred fabulous expenses in L.A., mostly in rental costs… not the least of whichwas leasing himself a new Ferrari… CBS meanwhile, reporting substantial sales from‘Double Dutch Bus,’ was charging so much for pressings, promotion, and distributionthat the net profit on sales, Larry’s one source of return on all these investments,was close to zero.” Frankie Smith was owed about $30,000 in royalties, and he sanghis complaints like a canary. Frankie Smith reported Lavin to the IRS, which setLavin’s ultimate fate, you will pardon the pun, snowballing.While Frankie Smith wasn’t getting paid, Stewart was enjoying the high life. OnSeptember 4, 1986, Lavin pled guilty to operating a continuing criminal enterprise,conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute, tax evasion, and other charges andwas sentenced to consecutive prisons terms totaling to 42 years. According to hisWikipedia page, Frankie Smith “is currently working as a delivery driver for ACReproductions in Philadelphia, PA.” We can assume he never got and continues to notreceive his royalties. Sorry Frankie that you never made a penny off this song. Dr.Larry Lavin took all the profits off this song and became the biggest coke dealer inPhilly. Damn this track is still hot. White hot. HAHA. This song always played atparties I went to and The one line that stuck with me was Give me a Ho if you gotyour funky bus Fare. And everyone at that party always shouted HO, HO. What's up! Welcome to "Soul Sundays" today I'm going to change it up a bit.  When I
didn't want to play oldies and wanted some faster music to groove to Funk was always
one of my other choices in music.  My selection today is "The Best of one way"
featuring Al Hudson & Alicia Meyers. They had many hits such as "Pull Fancy dance",
"Mr. Groove", & "Cutie pie".  
One Way was an American R&B/funk band that was popular in the late 1970s, and
throughout most of the 1980s.
Originally, One Way came out as Al Hudson , Alicia Meyers & the Soul Partners and
recorded a few interesting, but unsuccessful albums for ABC Records. They were then,
and are now, a self-contained act, though the original name suggests a standup vocal
group. Essentially, Midwest wonders, they never crossed over, and never got as big
as predicted on the R&B circuit, despite having a devastating live act.   One way
was a talented group & made hit after hit. You should also check out "if you play
your cards right", "Pop It" & "Burn it".  I remember when cruising was in, my
friends & I use to cruise Whittier Blvd.  "one way" was always on repeat to get the

What's up welcome to Soul Sundays! Today's selection is " No man is an Island" &"You need confidence" by "The Vandykes" This group was formed in Fort Worth, Texasin 1964. The same year the most iconic Chevy impala was built. I'm very proud tosay I'm an owner of one. Rondalis Tandy (lead vocal) teamed with three aspiringsingers, Wenzon Mosley (tenor), James Mays (bass) and Eddie Nixon (falsetto). Nixonleft prior to recording ‘No Man Is An Island’, which was the Van Dykes’ firstsingle, the prototype for many of their subsequent releases. This exquisite balladfeatured Tandy’s tight falsetto, while a sparse instrumental section emphasized thethree singers’ close harmonies and their indebtedness to the Impressions. The triofolded in 1968 following Tandy’s departure for California. This is another talentedgroup that fell apart too soon. Welcome to Soul Sunday's! Today is a tribute in memory of The Soul King Mr. DonCornelius. He passed away earlier this week at the age of 75 due to an apparentsuicide. Don Cornelius was the silken-voiced host of "Soul Train" who helped break downracial barriers and broaden the reach of black culture with funky music, crazy dancesteps and cutting-edge style. "Don Cornelius gave artists who had been segregated from most mainstream vehicles ofexpression a chance to perform in front of a huge national audience, "It was atremendous opportunity that changed their careers and the whole music industry.It showcased such legendary artists as Marvin Gaye, Barry White, and MichaelJackson. He brought the best R&B, soul and later hip-hop acts to TV and hadteenagers dance to them. It was one of the first shows to showcase African-Americansprominently, although the dance group was racially mixed. Cornelius was the firsthost and producer. I remember growing up and watching soul train I always wanted to see the fashion and follow the dance moves. Especially, during the The `Soul Train' line – that will go down in history. What's up! Welcome to Soul Sunday's today's pick is "Love Jones" & "I Owe you love"
by a Brighter Side of Darkness.  They were a short-lived American R&B/soul group.
They were formed in 1972 in Chicago, Illinois. Their lead singer was only 12yrs old,
Darryl Lamont; the other members were Ralph Eskridge, Randolph Murph and Larry
Washington.

They released the single "Love Jones" in December 1972. It was a hit in the US and
was certified gold by February 9, 1973 by the RIAA.  In 1973 they released their
first album called Love Jones.  Their second single, "I Owe You Love", was less
successful, and the group disbanded in 1974.  Too bad talented groups like them
didn't survive the music business that deserved more recognition.  Hopefully,  they
remained on the right path and didn't turn gangster & rob their nearest liquor
store.... HAHA

I found an animated clip created in 1974 by Cheech & Chong called "Basketball Jones"
this was a parody of "Love Jones" from Brighter side of Darkness, this film features
Tyrone Shoelaces from their album Los Cochinos. The cartoon was created to promote
the song's release in the United States. It's about a teenager named Tyrone
Shoelaces and his love of basketball. It's a trip...  Thanks for "Tooning In"

Today's selection for Soul Sunday's is "At Last" & "I'd Rather go blind" A tribute to
the Legendary Soul Diva Etta James. She passed away this Friday the 20th of Jan.

to complications of leukemia at the age of 73.  
Etta James (born Jamesetta Hawkins; January 25, 1938 – January 20, 2012) was an
American singer whose style spanned a variety of music genres including blues,
rhythm and blues, rock and roll, soul, gospel and jazz. Starting her career in the
mid 1950s, she gained fame with hits such as "Dance With Me, Henry", "At Last",
"Tell Mama", and "I'd Rather Go Blind" for which she claimed she wrote the lyrics. 
She faced a number of personal problems including drug addiction before making a
musical resurgence in the late 1980s with the album The Seven Year Itch.

She is regarded as having bridged the gap between rhythm and blues and rock and
roll, and is the winner of six Grammys and 17 Blues Music Awards. She was inducted
into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001, and the
Grammy Hall of Fame in both 1999 and 2008. Rolling Stone ranked James number 22 on

their list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time and number 62 on the list of

the
100 Greatest Artists.  
 I'm including a clip from the movie Cadillac Records made in 2008. Written &
Directed by Darnell Martin.

Featuring Beyonce Knowles as Etta James & Adrien Brody as Chess. This film

explored the musical era in the early 1940's to the late
1960's.  Beyonce sings I'd rather go Blind in this clip & She kills it.. I highly
recommend you see this movie. 
The world lost another true legend but her legacy will continue. 
I walked down the aisle to "At last" playing so I will forever remember & treasure
this song.

Welcome to Soul Sundays, it's that time again to share with you my favorite songs... Today's selection is "You've got the makings of a lover" by The Festivals -featuring Vaughn Price, Earl Moss, Woody Price, and Leon Thomas --" The festivals" never got the break they needed to succeed, but not for lack of trying and not because they recorded for mom and pop companies. They debuted on Smash Records with "I'll Always Love You" in the fall of 1966, which produced some mild rumblings in a few cities. Momentum increased in the spring of 1967 when Smash records released their best-known and best recording "You've Got the Makings of a Lover," a Earl Moss composition that highlights their vocal blend. The band (Sly, Slick & Wicked) from Los Angeles re-did the song in the '90s; that version inspired many to seek out the original by "The Festivals" that most listeners never heard when it was released because Smash records only promoted The record in select cities. I'm including Sly, Slick & Wicked's version too so you can check it out..... There was also another re-make done by one of our favorite singers Mayer Hawthorne many props to him. 40 yrs later to hear the younger generation like Mayer Hawthorne re-do this song is not only amazing Mayer Hawthorne adds his touch with retro soul & a contemporary twist. This young man is from Detroit & full of soul. In the music world he's built an impressive reputation for himself. He keeps the old sound alive. Check his music out. You won't regret that you did!! Hip-Hop Gives Back to Skid Row with Free 1/15 Concert feat. Public Enemy, Cypress Hill, Kurupt, King T, Kid Frost, Egyptian Lover + more.

January 7th, 2012

Dubbed as both the Operation Skid Row Music Festival and the Occupy Skid Row Music Festival, on January 15th Chuck D and Public Enemy along with a dozen or more (mostly old school LA) hip-hop acts will put on a free concert for the down-on-their-luck residents of Los Angeles’ desolate Skid Row district. The list of other performers for this wonderful free all afternoon event, that will also be open for free to anyone from anywhere who wishes to attend, includes Cypress Hill, Kurupt from the Dogg Pound, Mellow Man Ace and Zzyzzx, King T, Rapper’s Rapp Group, Sir Jinx and General Population, OG Kid Frost, L.A. Posse, and the Egyptian Lover. What makes this concert significant is that all of these artists have agreed to perform for free as a an unselfish token in this new year for the homeless population of LA’s famed Skid Row area which contains one of the largest stable populations of homeless persons in the USA. A 2011 study estimated that Skid Row’s population was at over 4300 people!More

As with so many of the worthy events and happenings associated with Skid Row that I hear about this one too is also linked directly back to General Jeff – the longtime LA hip-hop figure, friend of Amoeba, hip-hop golden age recording artist, & community activist/tireless supporter of the rights of LA’s Skid Rowcommunity. General Jeff (real name Jeff Page) is Resident Director for Central City East/ Skid Row & is on the Board of Directors for the Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council as well as being VP of Outreach and Communications and is always down to volunteer his time, skills, and endless energy to the worthy residents of Skid Row with whom he has worked on behalf of for years. This morning I caught with General Jeff, who was up early busy at work while listening (he informed me) to the late great LA hip-hop artist Mausberg’s Non-Fiction album.I asked General Jeff whose idea it was for this wonderful festival and how it all came about? “The “Occupy Skid Row” Music Festival came to me from Chuck D of Public Enemy. He was already working on a book with another great Skid Row activist Pete White of LA CAN (Los Angeles Community Action Network). Chuck D came to Skid Row last year on that project and he and I re-connected after all these years. The last time I saw Chuck D was when I was with Rodney-O and Joe Cooley and we did a couple of shows in Denver as P.E.’s opening act,” he said continuing, “We exchanged contact numbers again and Chuck mentioned that he was feeling the positive energy coming out of Skid Row but felt that it needed to be bigger. He offered to use his “rep” in order to shed more light on our community’s issues. He felt that the best way to do this was via a concert. We initially choose the summer of 2012. Obviously, we couldn’t wait that long!”

On the same date as the concert, January 15th aka Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, that book that Chuck D and Pete White were working on titled Freedom Now will have a book launch event at LA’s Grammy Museum (across from the STAPLES Center) from 10am until 1pm. “Chuck contacted me and said that immediately after the book launch, he wanted to come to Skid Row and do the concert. Keep in mind that he told me this only two days before Christmas. That meant that we only had two good weeks to put this thing together,” said Jeff of the impressive work that went into this last minute event. “Luckily, my name is still good in the rap game. As I reached out to the talent, all of whom I consider good friends, not one of them hesitated after I told them what we were trying to do. They all wanted in! As a matter of fact, we’re expecting more acts than we have time for. Some of the groups are flying in from out of town just for this. Spending their own money on plane tickets, knowing that they aren’t making anything. Simply wanting to give back. This event is about hip-hop giving back. We’ve had interest from other big name stars, but they haven’t confirmed yet but by the time the show happens they’ll probably be right there.”

What is even more impressive is that none of these acts expect to or asked to get paid when Jeff told them that it would a 100% non-fiscal event (no money at all being exchanged – just goodness & good vibes). Everybody performing agreed that it should be a free concert for all the old school hip-hop fans, as well as the homeless folks that will be in attendance happily reported Jeff. “One big happy family, from all walks of life. Led by a true pioneer, Chuck D, who said “With all the ‘Occupying’ going on all over the world, it’s important that Hip-Hop use our collective voice and join in the worldwide movement. That’s why Hip-Hop will ‘Occupy’ Skid Row on January 15th!” Following a half hour press conference the talent packed music festival will run from 1:30pm until 5:30pm on Sunday January 15th in downtown LA’s Skid Row district (follow the crowd and the sound of the music to find the stage). Welcome back to Soul Sunday's! Today's selection is Linda Jones "Hypnotized" Linda Jones has an amazing voice. Both Aretha Franklin & Gladys knight have made it clear that she was one of the greatest female artists they have heard. I read something interesting after doing research on this song that when Linda Jones Recorded "Hypnotized" which was given to her by George Kerr. They were in the studio and she said lets run it down. She was still learning the song. George Kerr told the engineer to hit the record button, One take was all it took and that was it. He said she sang it so good it gave him goosebumps. She wanted to re-do it because she was saying "Hypnotized" with an "M" instead of "Hypnotized" with an "N". George Kerr wanted to keep it the way it was & didn't change it. He said Linda Jones was so upset she cursed him out. Amazingly that single take, mistake & all was one of the greatest singles of the sixties. Released on Loma records in 1967. Many re-makes were made of "Hypnotized" by Bloodstone, The Elegants etc... but my favorite version of this song is by Ms. Lady T , Teena Marie. She kills it. Sadly, that both of these talented woman were taken too soon and are no longer here but their music continues to live on. Today's Soul Sunday's selection is "The Madlads" They were once known as "The Emeralds" after Discovering that another group had the rights to the name Deanie Parker came up with the name "The Mad Lads." The Mad Lads (members John Gary Williams, William Brown, Julius Green and Robert Phillips - who replaced Harold Thomas on the day of the session after his father forced him to do a paper route rather than go down to the studio) The Mad Lads (members John Gary Williams, William Brown, Julius Green and Robert Phillips) Julius Green and Robert Phillips did not want John Gary Williams to rejoin group after he had completed his military service claiming he was too bossy. William Brown and STAX co-owner Jim Stewart made them reinstate him. Later on one of the members of the group had been imprisoned for cheque fraud. After all the trials this group has been through. The legacy of the music still inspires people today. I found this old school crazy footage of The Mad lads singing acapella to "Don't have to shop around" it's a Bizarre sequence from a 1975 slapstick exploitation film called "The Down town Strutters". Welcome back to Soul Sunday's, since it's christmas today's selections are "Santa Baby" by the the famous "Sex kitten" Eartha kitt & Mariah Carey's "All I want for Christmas is you "Eartha Kitt died in New York, where she was being treated for colon cancer. She ironically died on christmas day in 2008 at the age of 81. She was best known for her portrayal of Catwoman in the Batman television series of the 1960s.She was one of the few artists who have been nominated for Tony, Grammy and Emmy awards.When miss kitt was diagnosed with cancer She refused to give into the disease, brazenly continuing to flaunt her attributes. Eartha kitt was a product of slavery & rape. Her mother was black & Cherokee who lived on a plantation & her father was white he raped her mother and she was born. Eartha's mother gave her away at birth & even though she was an orphan and had a rough childhood she didn't allow that to stop her from becoming successful. I'm including Mariah Carey's video. Welcome back to Soul Sunday's! Today's selection's are "I'm Gone" & "Lee Goofed" by Shirley & Lee. Their debut single "I'm Gone" was written & produced by Dave Bartholomew, imperial's writer/arranger/ producer. "Lee goofed" was a comeback for "I'm Gone" Early in their careers, Shirley & Lee became known as "The Sweethearts of the Blues," a nickname given not for their personal relationship, but for their romantic sagas of their songs, which often bordered on telling a fictional soap-opera storyline about two lovers. Their fans would buy the singles simply to keep up with the continuing story of the two sweethearts. The story continued with the very next single, "Shirley Come Back to Me," a heartbreaker released in early 1953, followed by "Shirley's Back," later that year. This happy theme continued through the happy ending for the next single, "The Proposal" & "Two Happy People." after the story telling through their songs they decided to change it up a bit with "Let the good times roll". Shirley & Lee parted their separate ways in 1962-1963. In 1974 Shirley joined another group and called themselves Shirley & Company & created the disco hit "Shame, Shame, Shame" a very big transition from the other songs she did.... I'm also including this song. The video is a trip very old school.Happy Holidays & stay humbled.

Christopher Eric Hitchens (13 April 1949 – 15 December 2011) was an English^[7] author and journalist^[8] whose books, essays, and journalistic career spanned more than four decades. He was a columnist and literary critic at The Atlantic, Vanity Fair, Slate, World Affairs, The Nation, Free Inquiry, and became a media fellow at the Hoover Institution in September 2008.^[9] He was a staple of talk shows and lecture circuits and in 2005 was voted the world's fifth top public intellectual in a Prospect/Foreign Policy poll.^[10]^[11]

Hitchens was known for his admiration of George Orwell, Thomas Paine, and Thomas Jefferson and for his excoriating critiques of, among others, Mother Teresa,^[12] Bill and Hillary Clinton, and Henry Kissinger. His confrontational style of debate made him both a lauded and controversial figure. As a political observer, polemicist and self-defined radical, he rose to prominence as a fixture of the left-wing publications in his native Britain and in the United States. His departure from the established political left began in 1989 after what he called the "tepid reaction" of the Western left following Ayatollah Khomeini's issue of a fatwā calling for the murder of Salman Rushdie. The September 11 attacks strengthened his internationalist embrace of an interventionist foreign policy, and his vociferous criticism of what he called "fascism with an Islamic face." His numerous editorials in support of the Iraq War caused some to label him a neoconservative, although Hitchens insisted he was not "a conservative of any kind."^[13]

Identified as a champion of the "New Atheism" movement, Hitchens described himself as an antitheist and a believer in the philosophical values of the Enlightenment. Hitchens said that a person "could be an atheist and wish that belief in god were correct," but that "an antitheist, a term I'm trying to get into circulation, is someone who is relieved that there's no evidence for such an assertion."^[14] He argued that the concept of god or a supreme being is a totalitarian belief that destroys individual freedom, and that free expression and scientific discovery should replace religion as a means of teaching ethics and defining human civilization. He wrote at length on atheism and the nature of religion in his 2007 book God Is Not Great.

Though Hitchens retained his British citizenship, he became a United States citizen on the steps of the Jefferson Memorial on 13 April 2007, his 58th birthday.^[15] Asteroid 57901 is named after him.^[16] His memoir, Hitch-22, was published in June 2010.^[17] Touring for the book was cut short later the same month so that he could begin treatment for newly diagnosed esophageal cancer.^[18] On 15 December 2011, Christopher Hitchens died from pneumonia, a complication of his cancer, in the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas

Today's Soul Sunday selection is Donnie Elbert "What can I do" & Have I sinned"Donnie Elbert was born on May 25, 1935 in new Orleans, LA he recorded his first successful song on the Deluxe label entitled ‘What Can I Do?’ with the song hitting number 13 on the R&B charts and number 61 on the pop charts. After recording a few more songs for Deluxe label, in 1959 he finally charted with the song ‘Have I Sinned’. Donnie wrote the song based on a relationship that his best friend was in and was caught ‘cheating’. The woman involved in the relationship found out and left him. In a conversation with Donnie, the friend told him how remorseful he was about his ‘cheating ways’ and how sorry he was about losing a ‘good thing’ he had with her. Donnie had stated to the friend that he had sinned but the time the story was being told and completed, he began to hum and formulate the melody of the song in his head. He wrote the song, remarkably, in minutes...I remember growing up to this song. The picture in my head is so clear of when my parents use to have house party's In their garage with their friends. Donnie Elberts songs playing while they were dancing with their hands up to their chest, hands like a fist moving side to side very smooth.. These friends had names such as Chuco, Chica, Gata, Gato, NightOwl, GreenEyes, etc..The girls had long hair with feathers like Farrah Fawcet, their make-up was done with white eye shadow, thick black eyeliner, a lot of blush and the black plastic bracelets all the way from their fingers to theirs elbows. The guys had on either brim hats or hair nets with their hair smelling like three flowers, wearing Dickie's with creases so sharp you can cut yourself, black house slippers or Stacey Adams.. Some of you can relate and most of you might think that was a dysfunctional childhood.. Looking back and even though I was young I remember these times and being so infatuated with the music the sound & the words.. I'm thankful to have experienced those times and embrace the lifestyle it entailed. Hope you like my selection. Stay humbled.

Welcome back to Soul Sunday... Todays selection is Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers "Does your mama know about me" Tommy Chong from Cheech & Chong co-wrote this song & played guitar for this band before he became a comedian. "Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers Originally known as “Little Daddy and the Bachelors, or "Four Ni**ers & a Chink” Changed their name because of the politically correct 1960's.
Tommy Chong who is white and Chinese wrote this song because of his experience of discrimination while growing up as a young man and marrying his first wife, a black woman. When I first heard this song I didn't realize the history. I always thought it was a gangster telling his lady does your mama know about me.. I guess this song can apply for many couples that don't have their parents approval of their partner whatever the situation is.

I'm including a male version & a female version by The Supremes which is also a big hit!! I also found a clip of Cheech & Chong performing this song live at a casino last year. They get down!! Check out other versions of this song by "The 21st century", "Jermaine Jackson" & "The Harletts".....Hope you like my selection... Stay humbled.
